Hidden Garmin

The Hidden Garmin

The kids are grown and out of the house so my husband and I planned a long overdue vacation to South Dakota.  We had not been on vacation in years so we were like two teenagers who just got the keys to their parent’s car to do whatever we wanted.  Footloose and fancy free we were going to be leaving the TV behind, phones at work, computer, and all those other electronics that take up the majority of our day.

We didn’t want every minute planned; we were in for an adventure.  We wanted to take things in as they came and just go with the flow.  We rented a SUV because it seemed to fit in more with our escapade not to mention a SUV was better equip for the terrain of the southwest than our Ford Focus was.   My husband Chris did MapQuest for our final destination and the way home.

If we saw something on the way we wanted to see, well then we would stop and see it. Everything was packed and ready to go.  We did one final sweep to make sure the stove was off, and the garbage was out, and let the neighbors know we were leaving.  In our excitement to leave, we soon discovered about 50 miles into the trip that Chris left the directions he had printed out on the kitchen counter.

I could kick myself because of all things I did not want to plan , I could’nt have planned my husband forgetting the directions.  This was his MO but we didn’t let it get us down.  This was not a problem, we thought we would stop and get a map and do it old school like back in the day.  Our first stop to a gas station of course did not have a map of South Dakota, we were not anywhere near our destination.

So we got a map of Illinois.  We figured we would probably have to get a map in every state until we reached South Dakota!  We really were living up to our pledge to have an adventure when we saw a sign for a restaurant we saw on TV and wanted to stop there.

After a very good lunch, (Diners, Dives, and Drive-Inn’s were right it was good) we started out to get back on the highway and discovered ourselves lost in the corn fields somewhere in Illinois. Every intersection was a corn field.  As far as you could see, there was corn.  I looked in the glove box of our rented SUV for anything that would help no luck.

Then I opened the center console and this beam of sunlight shined down upon a Garmin like something out of a movie.  I expected to hear music playing in mid air when I saw it. It was like an angel.  I was not a stranger to GPS.  We did not rely on GPS that much because we never went anywhere until now.

We had the other brand, you know, the one that goes by the beat of its own drum like Tom Tom.   The first thing I noticed when I turned it on was how fast it got a signal.  That is one reason I didn’t use the Tom Tom that much because I could be at my destination by the time it received a signal.

Chris and I were very excited to see this.  We had no idea if it just came with the SUV or if the last person to use this truck left it in here, but we were happy to see it.  We didn’t have a manual but it was not very hard to figure out how to use it.  We entered the information in for the general area we wanted to go and in a matter of a minute; the Garmin was talking to us telling us how to get back on the highway and on our way.

That’s the other nice thing we noticed, Garmin talks to you unlike the other brand.   We had a long way ahead of us so I played around and found out the Garmin is loaded with information.  It will tell you every restaurant close by, where hotels and motels are.  Even places of interest are listed.

If I had known Garmin had all this, we would not be relying on our “if we see it we will stop” motto.  There were so many interesting things to see on the way that were not necessarily along the beaten path.  You had to make some slight detours, but some were well worth it.  We saw much more with the help of Garmin that we would have seen by winging it.

It even made sure you knew what lane you were supposed to be in with what they call “lane assist”.  It told you how fast you were going and even blinked if you were exceeding the speed limit.  Took me awhile to figure that out but I thought that was way cool!

You may be finding it hard to believe in this day in age but we are not high tech people.  We have regular cell phones and just started using texting to communicate with our children. But you don’t have to be electronic savvy to use a Garmin.  It really was very user friendly and did not take long to discover all the extra things it was capable of doing.

This company really put a lot of thought into this in our opinion.  And we don’t even know all it can do yet.  We still had our adventure and even though we wanted to do this without the use of electronic gadgets, we were so happy we had the Garmin.  We didn’t miss the TV, or computer, and such but if I ever went on a long trip like this again there is no way we would go without it.

When we got back home we went online and found a great website loaded with information and the best place to buy a Garmin for the best price.  I also have some of my Christmas shopping done as we decided to get a Garmin 1350LMT for each of our children.  We learned a little more when we got home that the LMT means lifetime maps and traffic updates that Garmin provides.

What else will they think of?  Despite our resistance to succumb to the electronic age, there are some advantages to being an electronic gadget junkie.  So honey, where do you want to go next?

What I Wish I Knew When I Bough My Garmin

Garmin GPS System

Back when I purchased my Garmin GPS system I didn’t know what to expect. I knew I was going to get a GPS system, but I guess I didn’t really think about how to do it or what it was capable of doing. After all, it must come with instructions right? Wrong…well sort of . They are out there but you have to find them. In this article I put together some topics that I found very helpful. I hope you find my little quick start guide helpful and be on your way to learning how to use your Garmin GPS right away.

First Things First, Download A Manual

I was really surprised to find out when I did get my Garmin gps system that it did not come with a manual, just a quick start guide. So after doing some research I found out you need to download a manual if you want to know everything there is to know about your Garmin. Can you operate it without a manual? Yes, you can but will you know all that it is capable of doing? No, you will not. So the first thing I would do when you get your Garmin is go to google or bing and type in Garmin manual and then your model number and download a free copy of the manual so you will have it at your fingertips when you need it.

You Can Calibrate The Screen To Your Touch

At first I was really getting quite ticked that I had to tap my screen rather hard to get it to work. I was really getting frustrated that it didn’t do what I wanted it to do, when I wanted it to do it. I was really contemplating returning it. Then I discovered that you can calibrate your Garmin to your touch. All you have to do is hold your finger in the left hand upper corner and turn the screenon. Hold it until you see a dot on the black screen. This can take about 30 seconds or so, be patient. When you do see the dot, touch it as you normally would, with your touch. Keep doing this each time you see a dot, touch it they way you want it to work. After doing this a few times it will tell you that your Garmin is calibrated. That’s all there is to it. No more frustration.

How To View Your Overall Route

Whenever you type an address into your Garmin it will calculate your route and have it spelled out for you line by line. Well what if you wanted to just see the route from start to finish, a overall visual of how you were going to get there? Maybe you might want to do something different if you only knew. This is how to do it. Sounds like it’s not a big deal but until you find out how to do it, and it is simple to do, you will never see that route. After you plug your address in and it tells you the route, press on the street name at the top of the screen. It’s that simple, you will see a map with a line where you are and were your going. But if you didn’t know that, you would be spinning your wheels trying to figure it out.

Do I Really Want To Pay For Updates Or Should I Just Pay A Little More And Get A Garmin That Comes With Free Updates?

At first I thought to myself, why pay the extra money to be able to always get free maps and traffic updates? I’ll just pay for them when I need them, it can’t be that often. I’m sure it will be cheaper in the long run to do it this way. Well I was wrong. Had I known, I would have gotten free maps and traffic updates. Maybe you don’t even know what that means, so why look for it? The rate new streets are added alone is well worth it. Four times a year, if you have free maps and traffic, just plug your Garmin gps system into your computer and update your maps. Do you know how long it would take before your Garmin is out of date if you don’t? Not very long at all. The 3 little initials after the model number indicate free Lifetime Maps and Traffic. The initials are LMT. So if you are in the market for a Garmin Nuvi 1350LMT, know that the LMT means you will get free lifetime maps and traffic and believe me, it’s a big deal to be able to do this. Always purchase a Garmin with LMT in the model number.

The Garmin Astro 320 helps to do just that. Every 5 seconds, your dogs DC40 transmitter collar pinpoints his position on your rugged, waterproof, hand held, GPS receiver. It has up to a 9 miles radius in flat terrain and highly sensitive satellite signal to pick up your dogs whereabouts even in the dense forest.

DC40 Transmitter Collar Is No Ordinary Dog Collar

The DC40 transmitter collar is a tough, rugged, orange polyurethane collar that will support most e-collar receivers thus eliminating the need for 2 collars. Humidity, water, dust, or dirt is no problem for the DC40. Collar Lock creates a 4 digit pin number that prevents others from seeing your dogs whereabouts. This comes in handy in field trials and will assure the Astro is used only as a recovery device when your dog is in competition and becomes lost. To use, just go outdoors, attach the collar, turn on the GPS receiver to acquire a signal, and let Hunter run. It is the utmost essential hunting companion and you don’t have to feed it.

With Dog Tracker You Can Be Like That Fly On The Wall That Sees All

Once Hunter is released turn on Dog Tracker. It is a compass that will point to the location of your dog and tell you his status. Whether he is running, sitting, pointing, or tree quarry, the Dog Tracker will tell you. An alarm will sound the second your dog goes on point. It also has a built in vibration motor for silent alarms. After you have captured your quarry the Astro Convey Counter will mark the exact location, time of day, elevation, and number of birds you flushed and took from that particular location. You can also use it to find your truck again, or lodging, as well as icons that represent where you put all those tree stands, and other hunting related items.

Where Are You Hunter, You Found It Zeus, Track Multiple Dogs

You can customize a combination of your dogs names, find their direction, distance, and status, without ever leaving your map. Auto Zoom and see all 10 dogs locations at one time. Dogs that are too far away to fit in the zoom area will be noted in the margin. If you share your dog with a buddy, you can wirelessly send, receive, or transfer a dogs data such as name and ID and update rate between the two units.

Hunting is a popular sport, not only for the human, but for the dog too. You spend alot of time and money training your dogs, protect them with the Garmin Astro 320 and always know where your best friends are and what they are doing. Even if you don’t hunt, if you have a dog whose name perhaps is Houdini, you may want to consider the Garmin Astro 320 so at least when he goes off on his adventures, you will find your family member again.

Interactive Touchscreen Display

This is convenient since all you have to do is touch the screen. You can even set the screen to your touch so if you have a soft or hard touch it will respond. I have had a GPS in the past where I would have to press the screen several times because it wouldn’t respond. I guess I wasn’t hitting it hard enough.

Can See The Display In Sunlight

The Garmin 265W uses TFT technology with backlight. This will allow you to see the display in sunlight and on overcast cloudy days. You won’t have to cup your hand over the screen to block out the glare so you can see the screen. This makes driving safer since you won’t have to take your eyes off the road as long.

Supports Bluetooth

If you have used bluetooth you know how much safer it is to talk while driving. Lets face it cell phones are here to stay and people are going to talk while driving. I know it’s very frustrating to be behind someone with a cell phone stuck in their ear doing 35 in a 50 mph zone. Bluetooth helps with that. You can concentrate more on the road and with the bluetooth built into the Garmin, it’s even easier. You don’t have to keep switching the small ear piece on and off as you exit and enter your car or truck.

Turn by Turn Directions

The Garmin 265W display is easy to read. The colors and graphics help you determine at a glance what to do and where you are. It displays what’s up ahead so you can prepare what to do . It warns you that your turn is coming up in plenty of time and again when you actually get to your turn, it tells you to turn so it’s really hard to miss. When your on the road of your destination will actually tell you if it’s on the left or right hand side of the street.

Conclusion

This GPS take complex functions and make it simple so all of us can benefit. The wide screen makes it easy to see and the slim design makes it easy to carry around. It can fit in your purse or shirt pocket. If your the kind of person who doesn’t like to stop and ask for directions or have a significant other who doesn’t like to, then give the Garmin 265W a try. Click Here for an Incredible Bargain on the Garmin Nuvi 1450LMT

In this article you will find some of the most important features and how Garmin has taken technology and made it pratical for all of us to benefit.

No Need To Put On Your Reading Glasses….

Comes with a 5 inch screen. This might not seem like much but when you compare it to the Garmin 1350LMT with a 4.3 screen you can see the difference. This feature comes in handy for my wife. She can see far away but needs glasses for close up. It would not be practical for her to put glasses on everytime she wanted to see the screen. With the bigger screen and bold colors she won’t miss a thing.

Speaks To You…

With voice prompt the Garmin Nuvi 1450LMT speaks to you. It tells the street names and gives you turn by turn directions to your destination. So if your driving along not paying too much attention, in the past you might miss your turn, but now you will be alerted in plenty of time.  If for some reason you did miss your turn, it’s almost impossible to get lost with this thing because it  recalculates and puts you back on tract within seconds

Finds Signals In Seconds…

When you turn it on it picks up the satellite signals within seconds. That’s nice when your in a unfamiliar area and want to get out fast. I have had other GPS systems that take several minutes to find a signal. You could drive several miles out of your way by the time it corrects. The Garmin will find a signal usally by the time you put your car in gear.

Lifetime map and Traffic alerts…

With so many new roads being added or changed, Lifetime maps keeps you up to date. Update your Garmin 4 times a year. This is a free feature and will cost extra with other GPS systems. Traffic alerts is another free feature that cost extra with other systems. It will alert you of traffic jams ahead so you can chose an alternative route.

No More Confusing Expressways…

Lane Assist shows you which lane to be in (or not to be in) when approaching an intersection. It puts you in the correct lane to avoid having to make a sudden lane changes on a busy road or expressway.

Speed limits and Actual speeds displayed…

This feature alone could pay for your new Garmin GPS. Sometimes when your driving along you might not remember the the posted speed limit on the sign 10 miles back. The Garmin with display your speed and the posted speed limit.  If you’re going too fast your speed  it will display in RED  to warn you.

Tip…Is your screen not responding to your touch. Here’s how to fix it. Turn it off, then with your finger pressing in the top left corner turn it back on. Leave your finger there until you see some black dots, about 20 sec. Then just tap the black dots as they appear on the screen until it saids done. That’s it…now the screen will respond to the pressure of your touch.

Advanced Pedestrian Mode…

This is a nice feature when walking in unfamiliar areas. For example when on vacation and walking around in a shopping district or if you need to get around downtown and have to rely on walking but don’t want to get lost.

Use Buses And Trains, No Problem…

CityXplorer is optional and can be downloaded for a minimal yearly fee. It helps you get around the city transit system. It shows you where to walk to to catch a bus , train, tram or other types of transportation and how long it takes to get there.

Safety Camera…

This is one of my favorite optional features. This will warn you of those red light cameras and speed cameras. Just go to the Garmin website and download the “safety camera” software. It cost $26 a year but can be well worth it if it saves you from one ticket. You also get unlimted updates thoutout the year as new cameras are installed.

These benefits and more make the Garmin Nuvi 1450LMT the best selling Garmins on the market. It is well worth considering for your next GPS.

How The Garmin 1350LMT Will Save You Time

In my personal line of work I can quite simply put over 100 miles a day on my vehicle. I install custom window treatments and drive from home to home. I may visit anywhere from 3-15 houses per day working at installations.

It is very important to me that I plan my route in the most efficient manner possible. Especially theses days with gas in excess of $4.00 each and every gallon. When I first started out in this business their was no mapquest or google road directions. I used a five county atlas.

This Is How I Did It Way Back When

I would write out all the directions from house to house the night before. This was very time consuming along with tedious but had to be accomplished. It didn’t allow for wrong turns, if that took place I’d have to pull over and use the five county atlas.

Then arrived google maps and mapquest that made everyday life somewhat simpler. Now I was able to plug in the home address and immediately get directions. Back then google maps would definitely give you a individual address but still couldn’t do a route. So I was able to print the actual directions from point A to point B, then print from point B to point C on another copy and so on. The technology wasn’t there yet to schedule the entire route. Still that saves me the time of looking for all the streets in my five county atlas.

As Google Maps Improved So Did My Route

Then google maps came up with the know-how for you to do routes. This is so cool now I am able to plan the entire route.  This not just saves me time but supplies me with approximate travel times between stops and overall travel time for the purpose of my total route. My day basically got more efficient.

Then something happened at Christmas, my significant other bought  a Garmin 1350LMT GPS. GPS was out for a short time at this point and how come I didn’t look into it before I’ve got simply no idea. At first I though I didn’t need it since I seemed to be doing so good with Google maps. So it sat on my chest of drawers until my wife bugged me enough to give it a try.

Then Came The Garmin 1350LMT

So When I sat down and plotted my direction the typical way through Google then after I got the route I would then type everything in to the Garmin1350lmt. Then next morning I place the Garmin on top of my dashboard and wedged the google map route right into my visor and out I went.

The first thing that Garmin really helped me through is seeing street signs before hand. One of my own pet peeves with street signs is they are never big enough to read. When an individual’s doing 40 mph all the way down any road with cars in back of you and your looking for a road to turn on, it’s almost impossible to make out the street name with time to turn while not resulting in an accident.

The Garmin monitor will present all the forthcoming roadways. So I know way ahead of time exactly where and when to turn. It’s really nice I’m able to glance at it to see that highway I’ve got to turn on is actually 3 streets up. Actually, i know it’s right because it’s displaying all the streets before that and the street names match with the Garmin 1350LMT display screen.
